Interstate and Overseas Claims
There are major differences in the laws applying to ACT accidents and those in other states and territories.
How a matter is conducted (and which jurisdiction it is run in) is dependant on several factors:
- Where did the accident occur?
- If during the course of employment, in which state is the majority of work completed?
- Which State or Territory did you receive treatment in?
- Where do you live?
Given that the ACT is relatively small, quite often people who live in surrounding regional areas are injured while in Canberra, or are injured outside of the ACT. Your solicitor will discuss with you which jurisdiction is most relevant to your matter.
We handle many claims occurring in other states and territories, particularly in NSW, so do not hesitate to ring us to see if we can handle your claim. If we can’t, we will tell you and make suggestions as to who may be able to assist through our network of colleagues who are members of Australian Lawyers Alliance.
Proposed changes to Motor Accident and Workers Compensation laws in the ACT would greatly affect the rights of ACT people. To find out more about this, please go to www.faircomp.org. This may affect you, or someone you care about. Get active and support the bid to stop the proposed changes going through.
