If you have just been injured work through these steps so you can be sure you are protecting yourself for the future.

  • Call emergency services if necessary.
  • Use your phone to take photos of both the area the accident occurred and your injuries.
  • Make a note of where the accident occurred, including the name of the business or street names where necessary.
  • Get details of the person who caused your injury. This may be the name of the driver and the registration number of the other vehicle, an employee or a business name.
  • Get details of all witnesses including a phone number to contact them on later.
  • Find out if any witnesses have photos and ask them to send them to you.
  • Complete an accident or incident report. If there is no report available for you to complete make sure you report the injury to someone, in writing if possible. Email is fine.
  • If it is a work accident or injury, notify your employer immediately and ask for a workers’ compensation claim form. Complete the form as soon as possible, keep a copy and make sure your employer lodges the original form with their worker compensation insurer.
  • If it is a car accident in the ACT and the police didn’t attend do an online crash report on the AFP website. If you need help completing a crash report call the AFP on 13 14 44 or visit your local station.
  • Go to hospital or see your GP. Ask your GP to complete the right certificate for your circumstances. We can email you a copy of the correct certificate if you are unsure.
  • Keep all receipts for your treatment and copies of all forms.
